The first Ritual begins in
A sculpture waits in total darkness. It will only be seen by the light its witnesses bring to it.
Rituals are a live work in which collectors are invited into a piece shrouded in darkness. Each collector holds a unique flame, and each flame will illuminate the piece in its own way.
Over the course of the ritual those flames come together and the work is slowly revealed: a form no single person could have illuminated alone, shaped by everyone who took part.
Whatever state the piece is left in when the ritual ends becomes the finished work. That final state will be submitted to I was always here, later in 2027.
The piece begins unlit. Almost nothing of it can be seen.
Each collector brings a unique flame to the ritual.
Together, the flames light the piece and the form emerges.
The final lit state becomes the finished work, bound for I was always here.
The first Ritual takes place in Marfa, Texas, as part of Plastic Cactus, a group exhibition for Art Blocks Marfa Weekend.
